About the PM OPERA study
Q1: How long will the study last?
A: The study will start in Summer 2025 and is expected to last up to 26 months (with continued funding). The time commitment for participants will be approximately 20 minutes each month.
Q2: What does the ideal sampling site look like?
A: The sampling location should be safe and secure with no public access, situated at ground level, and have a wall, tree, or pole where the sampler can be securely mounted at least 1.5 meters (5 feet) above the ground, such as in a backyard. The sampler should not be near an outdoor cooking source (i.e., within 20 feet of a grill, smoker, outdoor kitchen, etc.).
Q3: Will the study collect any personal or private information?
A: Participants only need to provide the address of their proposed sampling sites, as well as their email address and phone number for communication and reminders. The study will not collect any demographic or socioeconomic information about participants. All information gathered will be kept confidential. A code will be assigned to each participant and their data. Only the research team will have access to the list linking names and codes. This list will be stored securely and deleted three years after the study ends.
About the Community Air Monitor (CAM) sampler
Q1: What is the size and weight of CAM?
A: Approximately 20” (L) × 11.25” (W) × 13.4” (H), and weighs 11 lbs.
Q2: Is CAM easy to set up and operate?
A: Yes. A 60-minute training session will be provided, along with a video tutorial and printed instructions.
Q3: Does CAM require a wall power connection?
A: No. CAM is solar-powered and should receive at least 3 hours of sunlight daily. CAM also has an internal battery that lasts about 72 hours (i.e. without any sunlight).
Q4: Will CAM take any sound, photos or video recordings?
A: No, CAM does not have a microphone or camera and cannot capture any sound, image, or video.
Q5: What if CAM is stolen or nonfunctional?
A: CAM has a GPS that updates hourly. If it moves more than 100 meters, the team will investigate. If it's nonfunctional, return it for troubleshooting and a replacement will be provided. Participants are not held financially responsible for lost or stolen units, but care is appreciated.
